Sweetened Condensed Milk

Sweetened Condensed Milk is evaporated milk with sugar added, resulting in a thick, sweet syrup. Anyone looking to try authentic Ca Phe Sua Da - Vietnamese-style iced coffee - will need sweetened condensed milk to complete the experience. However, most brands in the USA are too sweet and not creamy enough to give you a really "true" café experience. We offer three types of condensed milk that we've tested and found work well for this purpose. See below for more information about the different types.

More Information

Sweetened Condensed Milk is evaporated milk with sugar added, resulting in a thick, sweet syrup. Many tropical countries traditionally use sweetened condensed milk instead of regular milk in their coffee because of its improved shelf life; even after the can is opened, freshness is preserved by the sugar for much longer than plain canned milk.

Even after refrigeration became readily available, sweetened condensed milk remained the traditional way to lighten and sweeten your coffee in many places, particularly Vietnam. It has a uniquely rich taste and smooth texture. It is also easier to mix into iced coffee than granulated sugar.

Anyone looking to try authentic Ca Phe Sua Da - Vietnamese-style iced coffee - will need sweetened condensed milk to complete the experience. However, most readily available brands in the USA are too sweet and not creamy enough to give you a really "true" café experience. We now offer several choices of sweetened condensed milk that we have tested and found excellent for adding to coffee.

Longevity Sweetened Condensed Milk
- Most Authentic Vietnamese café style

This brand is made with thick whole milk for extra creaminess, and as a result, lightens coffee much better than Carnation or most other brands. It also has a fuller flavor, more distinctly "condensed milk" than Baker's Corner.

NEW: Longevity Gold! The difference between the two varieties (Original and Gold) is quite subtle, but Gold has a higher percentage of cream. This gives Gold a distinctly buttery taste that complements the Vietnamese butter-roast very well.

Baker's Corner Sweetened Condensed Milk
- Delicious North American Substitute

We used to only use Longevity brand when teaching coffee brewing seminars or for personal use, thinking it was the only acceptable choice. Imagine our delight upon finding out that Baker's Corner brand lightens and sweetens in perfect ratio! It, too, is made with whole milk, which accounts for its creaminess. The flavor is milder than Longevity, which may or may not be a plus, depending on your preference.

Which should you try?

Get Longevity if:
- You are trying to re-create an experience you had in Vietnam
- You want to get the most traditional and authentically Vietnamese taste
- You are buying a gift (the attractive Vietnamese can is an exciting addition to gifts)

Get Baker's Corner if:
- You would prefer the milder taste of Baker's Corner
- You want to save money

  1. 5 Star Review Subtle taste

I was introduced to the sweetened condensed milk when I ordered the Vietnamese Coffee MiniKit with Buon Me Thuot Special (S). I was surprised of the subtleness of its sweetness and I keep ordering the Longevity one to mix them with other grounds. I even mixed it with the G7 Black Gourmet Instant Coffee.
